I have an exercise where I ask the participants in the course to tell short stories based on important personal experiences. They illustrate their messages with objects. The stories are often incredibly impacting and relevant.
Sometimes I say in the feedback: “The more personal, the more universal.”
I am happy to find that The Guardian film critic, Leslie Felperin, thinks the same way. In her review of the Israeli film ‘Here we are’ by Nir Bergman, she says: “A perfect example of how a cinematic story becomes paradoxically more universal by being very specific about people and places.”
